This piece by Vershali Jain is inspired by the kaleidoscopic iconography of the Indian truck art. A unique art form—vernacular, anonymous, yet instantly recognizable.

"NAZAR is an evil eye. Truck drivers use decorative quotes to distract the evil eye: ‘बुरी नजर वाले तेरा मुँह काला /Buri nazar wale tera muh kala’ is a popular choice of quote by the truck artists. It translates to ‘Shame on you if you have an evil eye’

My work aims to capture both the symbolism of this art form and the dedicated spirit of the artists who freehand paint these trucks over long hours. I imagined how the layers of colors were built and how calligraphy was done with masterful brush strokes. With that same spirit and technique, I constructed my enamel work. These pieces serve as an ode to the unsung art of Indian trucks and celebrates the limitless potential of enameling for surface adornment." -Vershali Jain
